Routine Grooming and Cleaning

Routine grooming and cleaning is as important for our pets as it is for us: it improves their appearance, helps to prevent diseases, and contributes to their overall well-being.
  • Bathing should be done on an "as-needed" basis. Frequency depends on the individual pet. Never use a shampoo intended for human use. A dog's skin is much more sensitive than human skin and can cause serious skin irritations. They may also cause excessive drying of the haircoat and flaking of their skin.

  • Ears are an important part of pet hygiene. The ears should be examined routinely and if your dog has excessive hair, dirt, or wax build-up, they must be cleaned.
Note: Cotton-tipped applicators should never be used to clean ears because of the risk of inadvertently damaging your pet's ear drum.

  • Keeping the nails trimmed contributes to the health of the paws and also ensures that your pet will be comfortable when running and walking. Failure to keep nails clipped can, in some cases, result in in-grown nails, which can become infected and painful.

Selecting the right pair of Scissors to use.

  • Straight scissors of 8 or 8.5 inch are ideal to start the groom, especially when the coat is long and thick. These scissors can also be used for legs.
  • Straight Scissors of 7.5 inch are ideally used after this first step. Being lighter in style, they make the next step easier for the groomer and are also ideal for those who appreciate less weight in their scissors.
  • Thinning scissors are designed for those coats that need to be less dense. Three styles are available - 30 teeth, 36 teeth, or 46 teeth - to suit the individual preference of the groomer.
  • Curved scissors are very useful for the top of the head, when rounding legs and any of those difficult to reach places where the curvature of the blades allows for easier access.
  • Round-tip or Ball-tip scissors are important when working in the areas such as the head, near the eyes, around the ears and the pads. The rounded tips provide great peace of mind when working in the delicate areas.
